Backpacks of Trauma

The systemic racism and injustices endured by African Americans throughout history have had far-reaching effects on various aspects of society, including the foster care system. African American children and families have faced disproportionate involvement in the foster care system, experiencing higher rates of removal, longer stays in foster care, and disparities in reunification and adoption outcomes. These disparities can be traced back to historical inequities, discriminatory practices, and systemic biases that we refer to as “The Backpacks of Trauma” that continue to perpetuate disparities within child welfare systems and every life-domain of society.

Addressing these injustices requires comprehensive efforts to dismantle systemic racism, promote equitable practices, and provide support and resources to ensure fair and equitable treatment for all individuals involved in the foster care system.
